Pre-Wrap Surface Prep: Why It Matters

Introduction

Ninety percent of wrap failures trace back to surface preparation. Vinyl bonds to what it touches, and if what it touches is oxidation, silicone residue, or exhaust film, the wrap will lift at the first thermal cycle.

Professional prep starts with a degreaser wash, followed by clay or light polish to remove embedded contamination, then a final wipe-down with isopropyl alcohol panel by panel.

“Film does not fix bad paint. It photographs it in high definition.”

Existing paint condition matters too. Chips and flaking edges need to be stabilized first, because removing a wrap later can pull loose paint with it. A reputable shop documents pre-existing damage with photos before starting.

Conclusion

Ask any installer to walk you through their prep checklist. If the answer is a shrug and a spray bottle, keep looking. The hours spent before the first panel goes down determine how the wrap looks in year five.
